EDIT- You do not have to remove the strings. When the battery gets low you will have a weak sound. I could turn my volume knob a little and the volume would increase alot and quickly decrease without touching the knob. Try messing with the volume knob and see if anything different happens. If so, Then it is likely the battery.

How difficult is it (what's the procedure) to change a battery in active guitar pickups?
I had a Jackson with active pick ups. The 9 volt battery just unplugged as usual. Just take the cover off the back side opposite the knobs and you'll see it.
